"Shooting the Breeze" Live Interview With Martin Gallagher, the Artist Who Created Henry the Troll in Quarry Park (December 19, 2025)

If you missed Thomas Dambo's amazing installation of 15-foot handmade wooden trolls at the Filoli Estate this year -- dude, what were you thinking!?!

Well, lucky for you, Coastsider Martin Gallagher used his very particular set of skills, skills he acquired over a very long career, to make a giant handmade wooden troll right here on the Coastside in Quarry Park.

Settle in with a strudel and a cup of coffee while Krystlyn! and Reuben learn more about Martin and his big ol' troll, Henry.

A Different Idea for More Housing (December 19, 2025)

With unfunded mandates for additional housing coming down from Sacramento, regional agencies like ABAG, and Scott Weiner, the County turns its lonely eyes to the Coastside. Because, you know, so much open space out here.

Never mind that there isn't the transportation infrastructure, employment base, healthcare, and so on to handle thousands of new residents, the message is clear: BUILD HOUSES. Build them in your backyard, build them in vacant lots, build them in forested plots that are beneficial to the character and health of the Coastside. Building houses is so important in this country, they're considered a prime economic leading indicator.

So how can there be a shortage of places for people to live. Or is there? Maybe it's just a shortage of vision?

Photo simulation credit: San Mateo County Planning Department

Tune in to hear a couple of new ideas for dealing with the housing situation that don't involve bulldozing trees or land, don't need sketchy exemptions and exceptions to well-intentioned codes and laws, and that take advantage of "negative space."

"Shooting the Breeze" Live Interview With Johnny Valencia and Jazmin Negrete, Coaches for the Cunha Intermediate School Cheer Team (December 12, 2025)

Tune in and hear all about the brand-new Cunha Cheer Squad, which is really adding some fun and home court advantage to games at the Cub House. Rumor has it that Johnny and Jazmin might even try to show Reuben a couple of basic moves like the clasp, the High V, and of course, the pike jump. You do NOT want to miss this interview!

Stop With the Poison! (December 12, 2025)

If you're using it to kill some kind of carbon-based lifeform, we've got a news flash for you: it probably ain't good for any of the other carbon-based lifeforms either. The "it" here being poison: herbicides, pesticides, rodenticides. Tune in to hear about possible future loosening of restrictions for use of anti-coagulant rodenticides in our state. You know, the kind that cause a slow, agonizing death and are proven to make their way up the food chain. Yeah, that kind. It's bad.

This is a healthy mountain lion doing its mountain lion thing.

Selling Our Coastside Soul? (December 5, 2025)

Will the things that we love about the Coastside come tumbling down under the weight of their own attraction?

Are great blue herons and brilliant coastal sunsets and open fields of flowers compatible with relaxed zoning regulations, rental income homes, enterprise zone commercialism, and the Cult of Technology?

They'll also discuss the corollary to that question: is the Coastside a great place to raise children or the greatest place to raise children? Call in with your thoughts -- it's toll free!

The Kids Are Alright--HMBHS Homecoming 2025 (October 17, 2025)

Beginning that fateful March afternoon in 2020, we’ve been worrying about and seeing the affects of the pandemic on our children. Well, we're here to tell you folks, we saw a glimpse of the future last Friday at the high school, and there is reason for hope.

From a raucous and enthusiastic assembly in the school featuring class dances, the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen, and smiles, smiles that would make Mr. Roark proud to the Homecoming football game Friday night to the Homecoming Dance on Saturday night, the 2025 HMBHS Homecoming was an uplifting and superfun weekend.

A Primer on Pumpy Fest 2025 (October 17, 2025)

The one and only, 53rd edition, hometown throwdown -- the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival -- makes its annual appearance this weekend only, right here in Half Moon Bay. With so much to do, we thought you could use the inside scoop on what's happening where and when this glorious Coastside weekend. Listen in with a pencil and notepad so you can plan out every second of your Pumpkin Festival fantasy.

A New Pumpkin Champion Is Crowned (October 17, 2025)

Don't look now but there's a new sheriff in town. Sadly this is literally true, but we mean a new sheriff of the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off pumpkin patch town. Yeah, that metaphor was more strained than the forklifts hoisting the giant pumpkins at the weigh-off on Monday, but we know you get the pumpkin-spiced gist. It may have taken a literal act of God (per insurance parlance) to wrest the crown away from pumpkin GOAT Travis Geigner, but Brandon Dawson and his humungous 2,346-pound gourd pumped up and took home the title, the coveted pumpkin jacket, and $21,114 in seed money.

"Shooting the Breeze" Live Interview With Eric DeBode, Executive Director of Abundant Grace Coastside Worker (October 10, 2025)

Listen in as Reuben and Krystlyn! chat with a true lion of the people, Eric DeBode, as he explains what drives him to work so hard for others who are struggling in our society.

A Coastide Caltrans Mystery Solved? (October 10, 2025)

No, we're not talking about who authorized the illegal crosswalk installed by Caltrans with no public notice or Coastal Development Permit in Moss Beach in August 2019 -- but Reuben would love to open that can of worms back up if you want him to. We're talking statues, not statutes. This summer, the giant statue of Junipero Serra on the 280, the one that looked like he was throwing dice in some back alley craps game, up and vanished. Not only do we now know what happened to that statue, but it may help solve the mystery of what became of the statutory remains of one of his colonial compatriots. Intrigued? Tune in for the whole Sherlock Holmes.

El Granada Community Park Yet, Yet, Yet? (October 10, 2025)

What takes more than 10 years and 70 public events to get community support? Solid waste landfill? No. Flat-track motorcycle racing venue? Sounds cool, but also no. A parking lot for a government agency and a private business who aren't even in the actual community? Don't go there.

If you guessed a beautifully designed community park, then you have some serious issues -- and you'd be right. Listen in for more on the saga of El Granada Community Park.

Gone Fishin' (October 3, 2025)

While most folks crawled out of bed and schlepped down to clock in at work this week, the Federal Government slept in. Windows shuttered and a "Gone fishin'" sign on the door. How is this helping? Are you directly affected? Call in with your story and help Reuben and Krystlyn! try to make sense of this unforced error.

No News Is Bad News for the Coastside (October 3, 2025)

Especially for smaller communities like the Coastside, the economics of modern "content" have rendered the local news market unprofitable. And since money runs the world (alongside liability), local news is disappearing faster than open space in El Granada. Tune in for a locally sourced discussion on what this means for the Coastside and other small markets.

Whales, Falcons, and Hounds, Oh My! (May 30, 2025)

What's more snuggly than a 60,000-pound, barnacle-covered whale? How about three fuzzy-wuzzy widdle Peregrine falcon chicks bee-bopping along outside their nest? We know, it's dozens of adorable hounds -- some in costume! -- gathered at your community park. No, no, wait, what's cuter than a translucent, hard-shelled invertebrate insect! No? Well, maybe we went too far on that one. But still, all of these animals are living their best lives here on the Coastside. Listen in and commune with nature.

Maybe those aren't the right questions or the right metrics for determining the value of public comment. Time to bring in somebody with a positive perspective on the issue. Enter Lynnette Vega from La Honda Invisible, who will explain why she works to organize public demonstrations and why public comment is more than a zero-sum game.

A Public Comment About Public Comment (May 16, 2025)

The eternal question that Reuben will not let rest: What is the value of public comment and public protest? Has it become white noise to the decision-makers or does it make a difference? Does it only make a difference depending on who's doing the commenting? Is it just a vestigial ceremony in end-stage democracy? (The eternal question is one question, in 26 parts, in case you are keeping score at home.) Tune in and help talk Reuben down off the cliff on which he feels democracy is teetering.

Caltrans Changes Its Tune (May 16, 2025)

Caltrans is running out of ways to avoid dealing with  the slippery roadway on 92 East. Despite numerous accidents over the last few months, the most tangible response was a few oranges cones along the shoulder. Amazingly, this did not solve the problem. This week, Caltrans has suddenly changed its tune from from "Don't Worry Be Happy" to "High and Dry" to "Slip-Slidin' Away" and vows to develop an action plan. So what got the wheels turning, so to speak? Was it the power of public voice? Listen in as we talk this one out.

The Curious Case of the Midcoast Sign Stealer (March 14, 2025)

What's that saying? "Character is doing the right thing when nobody is looking." Well, . . . in the age of ubiquitous Nest cams, license plate readers, and other security surveillance, somebody is always looking. Maybe folks just don't give a hang anymore.

Join us as we dig into a curious case of sign stealing on the Midcoast and what that says about personal perspective and motivation, especially given today's political climate.

Reuben Returns! (March 7, 2025)

As you may know, the once high-flying Reuben TruthMaker was laid low by a devastating bicycle accident on Super Bowl Sunday. In the weeks since, he's been forced to reevaluate his priorities, his past actions and words, and his general outlook on life. It has been a physically grueling and deeply existential experience for him.

Tune in this Friday for Reuben's return to the mic and hear him discuss the accident and its physical and emotional aftermath.

And Now, Put Your Hands Together and Let Us Hear You Say "Hey, Oh!" -- The Triumphant Return of the Incredible Livvie Streeeeetwiiiise! (February 21, 2025)

This blew our entire 2025 budget, but it is soooo worth it. Back by popular demand, you know her, you love her, the top-rated Coastal Windage host of all time, Livvie Streetwise, returns to the mic for one show only.

Similar to Jacob Hamblin (look him up) there is only one known photograph of Livvie, and like Lady Gaga, Livvie likes to have fun with different outfits and hairstyles. It helps keep the paparazzi at bay (which is not a issue for Reuben).

Fear of ICE (February 7, 2025)

We try to stay out of national issues and politics on this show, except when they come right to our door. Which is what is happening with the immigration issue, figuratively, but not literally -- yet. Coastside, California, America -- it's time to check yourself.

Avian flu -- It's Not Just for Birds Anymore (February 7, 2025)

Ode to the 300! (January 31, 2025)

Time flies when you're having fun, don't you know. Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating our semiquincentennial and now it's already tricentennial time. And they said it couldn't be done. Just like the gondola. And a public swimming pool. And an above-grade Highway 1 crossing at Gray Whale Cove. And a continuous bike path from Moonridge to Montara. Words is just words -- and we know because we've said a lot of them over the last seven years -- but doing is doing, and this is what we've done. 300.

Hyatt Anxiety (January 31, 2025)

Good for the local economy. Bad for the view corridor. Good for jobs. Bad for traffic. Good for tax revenues. Bad for open space. And around and around. Does the Coastside need another hotel that your parents couldn't afford to stay at if they came to visit? Does it matter? Do occupancy rates call for more rooms? Does it matter? Did the City Council reach a decision last night? You get where this is going.

"Shooting the Breeze" Live Interview With Kate Shea and Vanessa Love of the Half Moon Bay High School Grad Night Procurement Committee (January 24, 2025)

Hear Kate and Vanessa explain what kind of resources are needed and how they manage to get them (hint: fundraising like the Grad Night Throwback Prom and Silent Auction). Listen in and find out how you can help out!

The #1 Taco Bell in the Entire Universe Is Back, Baby! (January 24, 2025)

It's great to be known for something. Pacifica has Rob Schneider, the displaced Gaspar de Portola statue, and the #1 Taco Bell in the entire  universe.* It was closed for a couple of weeks, but your Twisted Freezes jones is over. The Bell is back online baby, and still #1.

She's a Poet, Don't Ya' Know It (January 17, 2025)

Another episode of Windage, another mega celebrity in the studio. This time it's the first Poet Laureate of San Mateo County, Caroline Goodwin, who joins Reuben and Krystlyn! for a "Shooting the Breeze" live interview. Early reviews are saying this type of guest might be a little over Reuben's head, but Caroline is also a college professor, so we expect she'll figure out a way to deal with his ignorance.

What's In a Coastside Neighborhood? (January 17, 2025)

This month's "Coastside" magazine has an amazing piece profiling the 36!!! different neighborhoods on the Coastside from Pacifica to Pescadero. Are there really 36? Reuben, Krystlyn!, and Poet Laureate emeritus Caroline Goodwin -- all residents of Coastside neighborhoods -- look into the historical, cultural, geographic, and political factors that shape our Coastside community of neighborhoods.

The Ocean Shore Railroad stations, circa 1915.

Before GPS and Google Maps, there were paper guidebooks listing all the towns along the road.

Coastal Windage Annual Planning Retreat (January 10, 2025)

Normally we decamp to Cabo or Catalina Island or Barstow or some other exotic locale for our annual strategic planning retreat, but this year Reuben wants to crowdsource his workload, so we’re going to pull back the curtain and let you be a part of it.

Not only do you get to listen in and hear how the sausage is made, but you can also add your own sprinkle of spice to the coming year — if you call in with ideas!!

Main Street Never Looked So Good (January 3, 2025)

Did you notice how festive and fun Main Street, Half Moon Bay looked this holiday season? Well, part of the reason was the first-ever (!?!)
